About Dr. Uchenna Emenaha Miles

Dr. Uchenna Emenaha Miles is an award-winning professor, researcher, and author whose work sits at the intersection of science, culture, and equity. A Houston native with West African heritage, she brings a deep commitment to making STEM education inclusive, identity-affirming, and socially relevant.

With teaching experience spanning upper elementary, secondary classrooms, and higher education, Dr. Emenaha now serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, an R1 university, where she also co-directs the UTeachSA program to prepare the next generation of STEM teachers.

Her expertise centers on culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in science and STEM instruction, helping educators leverage students’ lived experiences to make science meaningful, rigorous, and engaging.

Her scholarship and leadership focus on bridging the divide between equity and science education—empowering both teachers and students to see themselves as change-makers in STEM fields. She has led federally funded and institutional grants, published widely in peer-reviewed journals, and delivered keynotes, workshops, and consulting services for schools, districts, and national organizations.

Dr. Emenaha’s upcoming book, Social Context in Science Class: A Guide to Teaching Race and Identity (Grades 6–12) (Corwin Publishing), reflects her passion for transformative education. This work provides educators with practical strategies to integrate race, identity, and equity into science classrooms, ensuring that every student’s story is valued and every learner sees themselves in science.
